South Australia is in the middle of a full-blown housing crisis. While thousands remain on the waitlist for social housing, rent prices have continued to spiral out of control.
In 2023, the SA Greens negotiated the biggest reforms to renting in South Australia in a generation which included ending no-cause evictions, extending the notice period to end a tenancy from 28 days to 60 days, and a new independent tenant’s advocacy service.
There is still much more to do! The SA Greens have introduced the Residential Tenancies (Minimum Standards) Tenancy Bill into State Parliament to set important standards on rental properties such as:
-
Appliances and dishwasher ratings
-
Efficient heater and coolers
-
Roof insulation compliance
-
Draught-proofing
-
Landlords required to disclose the energy efficiency of their home to potential tenants
-
SACAT given new powers to impose penalties on landlords who don’t comply with the standards
State Greens' Housing spokesperson Robert Simms MLC is hosting a politics in the pub, featuring speakers from Better Renting and SACOSS, to discuss what the next steps are for a fair go for renters. Come along to hear about the Greens’ plan to reform the rental system so that all South Australians have a place to call home.
